Mission Statement
Nyima Foundation strives to improve the lives of disadvantaged and vulnerable people through two programs - Nyima Microfunds and Nyima Grants.
Why We Help
Our end goal is to give the gift of education. But symptoms of extreme poverty and/or lack of basic necessities, like food, water, shelter, and medical care may inhibit the path of education. Through Nyima Microfunds and Nyima Grants, our hope is to fund sustainable projects that will directly or indirectly pave the way for opportunities in education.
Who We Help
- Orphans
- Abandoned children
- Households below the poverty line
How We're Funded
100% of every dollar you donate is used for charitable purposes. 100% of every dollar you lend goes to the borrowers. We also provide funds to other nonprofit charities and/or organizations that share our goals.
Nyima Foundation is primarily supported through the funds we raise from grants, foundations, and corporate sponsors.

Founder's Message
Greetings!
My name is Sunny Ommaney and I am the founder of Nyima Foundation, which strives to improve the lives of disadvantaged and vulnerable people through two programs - Nyima Microfunds and Nyima Grants.
I was born in Seoul, Korea. At a young age, a family in California adopted me. I was one of fourteen adopted children, representing seven different nationalities: Mexico, South Korea, United States, Nicaragua, China, Taiwan, and India. The experiences of childhood shaped my perspectives in adulthood, leading my heart to gravitate towards disadvantaged and vulnerable people, especially orphans. So when I decided to go to Tibet, while the mystery and beauty of the land were important, volunteering my time at an orphanage was paramount.
I lived in Lhasa, Tibet for over a month where I volunteered as an English teacher to over 60 orphans (kindergarten through 6th grades). The kids pointed to the sun and called me, Nyima, so while I am officially the founder of Nyima Foundation, it is the children’s inspiration that is the true founder. With a new sense of purpose and inspiration, I returned home and shared my experiences with friends in San Francisco. They encouraged me to start a nonprofit, which led to the birth of Nyima Foundation in March 2009.
We are deeply grateful for the fantastic support from all of our family, friends, and social investors. Together, we are changing people’s lives around the world!
With warm regards,
Sunny Ommanney
